biomass energy
Tolko has a growing green energy profile with eight biomass energy facilities that contribute to the onsite production of wood products. Two are cogeneration assets that also sell power.
The Armstrong cogeneration unit is EcoLogo certified, the Canadian national standards for green energy. The power is sold to BC Hydro, under an agreement that supports the province of British Columbia’s commitment to increase clean, green power.
The Kelowna facility sells excess power to FortisBC. In summer 2007 Tolko invested $2 million in upgrades to this cogeneration unit to improve its environmental and economic performance.
Together the facilities can produce 28 megawatts of green power—that’s enough electricity to power over 18,000 homes!
All the power sold is generated from renewable wood biomass, primarily bark from sawmill operations.
