Formaldehyde in Wood Products
no addeded urea-formaldehyde (NAUF)
Tolko oriented strand board (OSB) and plywood structural wood panels are manufactured with no added urea-formaldehyde (NAUF), moisture resistant adhesives. Formaldehyde emissions from Tolko’s finished product emissions are similar to raw wood.
National and international regulations already exist to maintain low formaldehyde emissions. In fact, the final panel products that Tolko produces have such low formaldehyde emission levels that they easily meet or are exempt from the world’s leading formaldehyde emission standards and regulations.

FORMALDEHYDE TESTING, CERTIFICATION AND LABELING
Tolko OSB panels meet Voluntary Product Standard PS 2, Performance Standard for Wood-Based Structural-Use Panels and are exempted from HUD and CARB regulations. The APA–The Engineered Wood Association’s Low Emission Custom Product Specification, PR-E710, uses the ISO 12460-4 desiccator testing method to certify low formaldehyde OSB structural panels. Emissions are a fraction of the permissible level specified in the most stringent formaldehyde regulations in the world.
Tolko Plywood is engineered for strength, performance and safety. Our Plywood is certified in accordance with CSA O121 & CSA O151. Only phenolic resins are used in Tolko plywood. These resins are capable of resisting conditions of extreme moisture & temperature and have extremely low formaldehyde emission levels. Formaldehyde emission testing of Tolko exterior plywood has been conducted by various accredited laboratories, using internationally accepted test procedures such as:
- ASTM E1333-90 “Large Chamber”
- Japanese JAS “Desiccator”
- European Standard EN 120 “Perforator”
- DIN 52368/EN 717 “Gas-analysis”
