Tolko Paper helps Canadians be Earth-friendly

The Pas, Manitoba - A kraft paper bag produced with biodegradable paper from Tolko Industries Kraft Papers Division in The Pas, Manitoba, provides a more earth-friendly option for waste diversion.

Two bag sizes are designed to handle wet organic food waste while a third larger bag is designed for yard waste. Several Ontario communities have mandated the use of 2-ply, wet strength, kraft paper bags for yard waste pickup. This yard waste is composted—bag and all—for repurchase by landscapers and the public. This recycling activity is intended to divert up to 20% from landfill volumes.

The wet organic food waste bags are designed for industrial and household kitchen use. The newly developed small bag is currently undergoing pilot project trials in several neighborhoods with very positive results. The larger, wet organic food waste bag was extensively used by the group that hosted the World Youth Day celebrations held this past week in Toronto. These bags are constructed from 2-ply wet strength kraft paper, have an inner ply of cellulose, and are self-standing for easy filling. All materials are fibre based and biodegradable.

"We are extremely pleased to be part of this new product application," said Ron Pirie, Canadian Sales Manager for Tolko Manitoba Kraft Paper Division. "Now households, restaurants, and institutions have an alternative for their composting needs that is functional and completely biodegradable."

"Whether people are looking for small or institutional organic food waste bags to sit at their sink, or large bags to handle yard waste, they can choose an environmentally friendly solution," added Pirie. "And it’s easy to use—they can simply throw the bag into their curbside bin or stand curbside for pickup."

Kraft paper is produced in The Pas at Tolko’s Kraft Papers Division. The plant produces several grades of high performance kraft paper for a variety of commercial and industrial uses. Tolko is a family-owned Canadian company that manufactures and markets specialty forest products.
