Tolko
announces Christmas shutdown
Vernon,
BC - Tolko Industries announced today that its lumber operations
in Lavington, Merritt and Louis Creek, BC will be shut down from
December 24, 2001 until January 2, 2002.
Brad
Thorlakson, Tolko's General Manager, Marketing & Sales, says poor
market conditions are the primary reason for the curtailment.
"Along with the rest of the industry, we are feeling the effects
of the softwood lumber dispute between Canada and the United States."
Tolko's
lumber operations in Quesnel, BC and High Level, Alberta will
continue to operate during the Christmas break. Its sawmill operation
in The Pas, Manitoba, which has been closed since November 7,
will remain closed until market and cost conditions improve.
The
curtailments at Lavington, Merritt & Louis Creek will take an
additional 7.7 million board feet of production out of the marketplace,
and together with the ongoing shutdown at The Pas, brings Tolko's
total curtailments to 37 million board feet.
Tolko
Industries is a private, family owned company whose primary business
is the marketing and manufacturing of specialty forest products.
Founded in 1961, the Company's corporate office is located in
Vernon, British Columbia.
