Kids and charities win contest
Merritt, British Columbia – Tolko Industries
Ltd. recently held a colouring contest in conjunction with National
Forest Week 2003. Children of employees in British Columbia, Alberta,
and Manitoba submitted their artistic take on this year’s
theme, “Sustainable Forests
. . . Source of Life.”
There were eight winners in all. In addition to small
gifts received by all entrants, these children had their pictures
professionally framed and won $100 to donate to a charity of their
choice.
Grand prize winner was seven-year-old Adam Yasunaga
of Merritt, British Columbia. On Wednesday, July 9, he presented
his chosen charity, the Canadian Cancer Society, with a $200 donation
from Tolko. Adam, who recently received his prize of fifty tee shirts
silk screened with his winning poster entry, was also presented
with his original artwork in a professional wooden frame.
Other winners in BC included Joey Burton, age 12,
of Louis Creek and Jonathan McIntyre, age 5, of Lavington. Earlier
this month they each presented $100 to their chosen charities, Medicos
En Accion and the North Okanagan SPCA.
Tolko began this contest four years ago to encourage
children’s participation in National Forest Week, to increase
their awareness of needs in their community, and to help them support
these social efforts.
Tolko has ten manufacturing divisions with over 2000
employees. British Columbia operations include sawmills in Quesnel,
Louis Creek, Merritt, and Lavington and a plywood plant in Heffley
Creek. Tolko is a leading manufacturer and marketer of specialty
forest products.
