Curtailment confirmed at Louis Creek
Division
Vernon, BC – Tolko Industries announced today
that its lumber operation at Louis Creek, BC will be shutdown for
a two-week period beginning June 30, 2003. Production will re-commence
on July 14, 2003.
Vern Parkstrom, Area Manager at Louis Creek, says
they had hoped that a production curtailment wouldn’t be necessary
but that a combination of factors has made the shutdown essential.
“The rising Canadian dollar, the ongoing US trade dispute,
and continued high log costs combined to force this decision. Even
though we’ve seen a price increase in the lumber market lately,
these increases have been more than offset by all these factors.”
Vern went on to say that the timing of the shutdown
was selected to allow employees to take vacation time if they choose.
“We hope that the summer weather and the fact that children
are out of school will make the shutdown less burdensome for our
employees.”
Tolko’s Nicola Valley Division in Merritt,
BC is currently experiencing a two-week production curtailment which
began on June 16, 2003. Production at the Nicola Valley mill is
scheduled to begin again on July 1, 2003.
