Tolko plants 100 millionth tree
The Pas, MB – June 11, 2003 will mark a significant
milestone for Tolko’s Woodlands department in The Pas, Manitoba,
with the planting of their 100 millionth seedling since 1984. Partners
and stakeholders are invited to attend a celebration that will include
planting of a commemorative tree, greetings from The Honourable
Oscar Lathlin, Minister of Northern Affairs, Harold Turner, Grand
Chief, Swampy Cree Tribal Council, and Al Thorlakson, Tolko’s
President & CEO.
Special guests at the celebration will be Bill
Jonas, former Woodlands Manager, who planted the 30 millionth seedling
in 1992, and Ed Johanson, former Manitoba Conservation employee
and long-time resident of Northern Manitoba, who planted the 50
millionth seedling in 1996.
In 2002, Tolko’s Manitoba Woodlands department
managed 3,916,800 hectares of forestlands, with an allowable annual
cut of 1,659, 250 cubic metres. They built or maintained 612 kilometres
of roads and planted over seven million seedlings in 2002 alone.
As part of their commitment to continual forest management improvements,
the department implemented forest certification to the internationally
recognized ISO 14001 standard in June 2002. Plans are now underway
to achieve CSA certification by the end of 2004.
Corporately, Tolko planted over 19 million seedlings
in 2002. The company will have planted over 296 million seedlings
by the end of 2003, and is looking forward to planting the 300 millionth
seedling in 2004. One of the Company’s mandates is that all
forest activities be ecologically suitable, economically feasible
and socially acceptable.
