Tolko continues to work toward adjustment plan for Kelowna Plywood employees
Kelowna, BC – Tolko Industries said today they remain committed to achieving the best possible results for all Kelowna Plywood employees affected by the permanent, partial closure of plywood operations at its Kelowna plant.
Jim Baskerville, Regional Manager, Okanagan Operations said that regular meetings with the adjustment committee are being held and that progress is being made. “It’s important to understand that early in the process the Union acknowledged and agreed that pursuant to the terms of the collective agreement Tolko is not obligated to pay any severance to the employees. We believe, however that an adjustment plan is achievable and to that end we have entered into discussions with local union representatives, the United Steelworkers national office, and government officials to explore all avenues of assistance.”
Baskerville went on to say that early in the discussions there was recognition by all parties that a solution needed to be achieved by early to mid-December. “We have been working diligently to meet this timeline as we work through this complex and complicated process. Many initiatives are underway and close to fruition. We must continue to work collaboratively and with a strong purpose to get the results we have all worked so hard to achieve.”
Baskerville concluded, “We know this is not an easy time for our employees but we urge them to remain committed to and engaged in the process that is underway.”
