Tolko undergoes $35 million upgrade
High Level, Alberta—The High Level Lumber Division
of Tolko Industries Ltd. Is undergoing a $35 million upgrade over
the next nine months.
The modernization project is part of Tolko’s
commitment made last winter to enhance its investment in Alberta’s
forestry industry, says Rob Layton, General Manager, Prairie Region.
Rob continues, “These upgrades will make us more competitive,
giving us a solid footing to manage the fluctuations of this industry.”
The project, which began last month, will include
significant upgrades to the log decks and machinery, the sawmill
equipment and optimization tools, and the lumber handling machinery.
At completion, the mill will have improved fibre recovery, increasing
the value achieved from each log and minimizing resource waste.
More than 9,000 person days will be spent on the
project, primarily through local contractors. “With a peak
of 70 people on site working to get the job done, this thirty-five
million dollar project is also creating an immediate spin-off to
the local economy,” adds Rob.
The project is scheduled for completion in June 2005.
In Alberta Tolko also owns and operates an OSB plant
in High Prairie and another, purchased last February, in Slave Lake.
Tolko Industries Ltd. is a family-owned private forest
