Woodlands Managers meet in The Pas

The Pas, Manitoba - Woodlands Managers from Tolko’s operations in Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia are meeting in The Pas over the next few days to see first hand some of the challenges faced by Woodlands staff in Manitoba. Blair Sullivan, Woodlands Manager for Tolko’s operations in The Pas, says the group gets together three times each year to discuss common issues, and to brainstorm potential solutions for challenges that are specific to each operating area. "One of Tolko’s values is open communication and this meeting is this value in action," says Blair. "We are a geographically diverse company, so not only do we operate in different terrain we are also separated by distance. Getting together and sharing ideas is extremely valuable. It also provides each Woodlands department with a benchmark for their activities."

The cost of logs to any mill operation is the most expensive part of the production process and this is especially applicable for the Manitoba sawmill and kraft paper mill. The expertise and diverse backgrounds of Tolko’s Woodlands Managers will be put to use as we tackle the issue of high log costs in Manitoba. Competitive log costs will help ensure the continued viability of mill operations.

A busy schedule is planned over the next two days. A business meeting kicks off the day on Tuesday, a sawmill tour is scheduled for late Tuesday afternoon, and on Tuesday evening the group will meet with Woodlands staff to answer questions and learn more about Manitoba activities. The Woodlands Managers will drive to Thompson on Wednesday to talk with local contractors and tour Tolko’s Forest Management License.

Blair concluded, "A different location is chosen for each of our meetings and I’m looking forward to hosting my colleagues in The Pas for this session. The combined knowledge and expertise they bring is a valuable resource which helps all of us to do our job better."
