The exterior grade plywood used in the harvest bins is manufactured with composed or welded core called UNI-COR. This eliminates core voids, overlaps and open gaps traditionally found in manufactured plywood. A composed core also prevents water from entering through the edges of plywood, thus eliminating swelling and expansion and extending the life expectancy of the harvest bins. All Tolko plywood is screened for delamination with state of the art computerized ultrasonic blister detectors. Panels that do not meet the quality criteria are rejected.
Bins are dipped in a latex sealant (safe for organic growers) to protect them from moisture penetration and ensure maximum longevity of the harvest bins. This is an added advantage in the field, the packinghouse and in storage.
Partially assembled bins are jig pre-positioned, while corner posts and corner brackets are semi-assembled. This makes for quick and easy on-site assembly of harvest bins and eliminates any guesswork in positioning corner posts, brackets and nails.
CUSTOMER COMMENTS
DURABILITY
"The key to the durability and long life of Tolko harvest bins in my plant are the high quality plywood, unique base design, and bolted skids."
Billy Potash
Cawston Cold Storage
12-year Tolko bin customer
Organic fruit grower/processor
“Tolko bins hold up in all weather conditions while providing a protective storage for crops from harvest to packaging. Durability is the key for us in using the Tolko bin.”
Robert Kinney
Fountainview Farms Organic Vegetable Grower
EASY TO STACK
“We do lab work for the mining industry on mineral samples from across Canada, the U.S. and the world. Tolko plywood bins work extremely well for us. The soft fruit bins stack easily and handle the weight of samples without any problem.”
John Wright
Supervisor CF Mineral Research
REPLACEMENT PARTS
“We started using Tolko bins in 1960. With 160,000 bins currently in use, durability and cost are key factors in using the Tolko bin. An added advantage is that all replacement parts are readily available for purchase, and at a fraction of the cost of a new bin.”
Richard King
General Manager BC Fruit Packers
SPECIALTY CONTAINERS
“Tolko collapsible bins have performed exceptionally well for us during the grape harvest season. The Tolko sales team works closely with us to meet our requirements. When we needed a specialty “tirage” container for our champagne bottles, we knew who to call.”
Bruce Ewert
Winemaker Summerhill Estate Winery
STABILITY IN TRANSIT
“Plywood bins are very stable and do not slide around on the trucks, (a common complaint of truckers hauling plastic bins). This minimizes any damage to fruit in transport. Plywood bins, unlike plastic bins, are also more stable on hillside orchards. Bins can be stacked up to 12 high with no damage to the fruit or the bins.”
Gord Heltman
Plant Manager Okanagan North Growers Co-Op
SECURE HANDLING
“We’ve been using plywood bins since 1960. In fact, many of our 18,000 bins are from the 60’s and 70’s, and are still in use today. A key issue in using the Tolko plywood bin is the “secure” handling and transport of organic and non-organic fruit from the orchard to the packinghouse.”
