FOREST
MANAGEMENT GLOSSARY OF TERMS
Allowable
Annual Cut (AAC)
The
volume of wood that may be harvested annually
under sustained yield management.
Biodiversity
(biological diversity)
Refers to the variety
of life on three different levels: the variety
of ecosystems (ecosystem diversity); the variety
of species (species diversity); and the variety
within species (genetic diversity).
Carbon
cycle
The exchange of carbon
between the atmosphere, the oceans and the living
environment. In living things, carbon, in the
form of CO2, is converted to organic nutrients
in plants through a process known as photosynthesis.
Carbon is restored to the atmosphere through
plant and animal respiration and the decay process.
Carbon
sequestering
The build-up of carbon
that occurs when the rate of carbon uptake exceeds
the rate of carbon release.
Ecosystem
A dynamic system of
plants, animals and other organisms, together
with the non-living components of the environment,
functioning as an interdependent unit.
Forest
management certification
An independent, third-party assessment
of field-level forest management practices and/or
management systems against specified environmental,
social and economic performance indicators.
Forest
development plan
A planning document that describes and
illustrates how harvesting, road development
and forest renewal for a specific area will
be managed for a period of at least five years.
Lignin
A binding material in woody tissues that
gives them structural rigidity. This is the
material that allows trees to stand upright.
Prescription
A written statement
defining the objectives to be attained and the
factors involved in managing a forest stand.
Resource
efficiency
Obtaining the greatest
possible value and maximum utilization of harvested
tree fibre.
Riparian
area
The area adjacent to
water bodies (e.g. streams, lakes and wetlands)
that is a zone of transition between aquatic
and terrestrial environments.
Silviculture
The science and art of growing
and tending forests.
Stakeholder
Anybody who feels that
his/her interests will be affected by the outcome
of a decision-making process.
Stewardship
Caring for the land
and associated resources so that healthy ecosystems
can be passed on to future generations.
