Industries Ltd. 1998/99 Sustainability
Report
WHAT
IS SUSTAINABILITY?
Until
the last quarter of this century, businesses
thrived with seemingly limitless natural resources,
room for competition and eager consumers. In
these conditions, companies measured their performance
largely against an economic, or financial, bottom
line.
As
the world population continued to rise rapidly,
environmental protection and social responsibility
gained importance as measures of continued success.
In addition to economic feasibility, companies
are now being challenged to evaluate their performance
against environmental and social bottom lines.
Sustainability
is the balancing of economic, environmental
and social performance.
As
a forest products company, Tolko has always
understood that it is connected to sustainability
and has made this an integral part of its business.
In 1999, Tolko updated its Environmental Policy
and developed its comprehensive Forest Management
Principles.

A
number of forest certification systems have
been created and are being further developed
by organizations such as the International Organization
for Standardization (ISO), the Canadian Standards
Association (CSA) and the Forest Stewardship
Council (FSC). With the assistance of Pricewaterhouse
Coopers, Tolko has undergone an independent
certification gap analysis to assess the consistency
and application of environmental policies and
procedures across the Company. Tolko will continue
to evaluate the various forest certification
systems as they mature, develop and become more
applicable. The Company will maintain a performance
level consistent with the standards being established
and will continuously improve against these
standards.
Tolko's Sustainability Report addresses the
Company's environmental, social and economic
performance in terms of the production chain:
Forest Management, Manufacturing and Sales and
Administration.
